What I Want Him To Do
It’s funny the things you remember sometimes. It’s even
funnier the things that will trigger a memory. I was simply sitting and home
about to head upstairs to make my evening coffee (yes, I drink coffee at night,
and yes I know it’s probably not the healthiest choice. Save me the lecture). But
anyway, I was about to head upstairs to make coffee and settle into what I call
my “writing cave” to knock out a few blogs for work.
Before I did that though I was checking facebook. For whatever
reason my eyes fell on some pictures that author/speaker Jared Herd had posted
of his family (wife and daughter). I also noticed saw some pictures he had been tagged in from, I guess, passed events he had spoken at. I know of Jared from years ago at Big Stuf
Camp. I was a college leader when he started speaking at Big Stuf Camps during
the summer.
He was still a young, single guy getting started in
ministry. He couldn't have been that knew because he was teaching at Big Stuf, but he
was knew-ish.
But as I looked at the pictures of him and his family my
mind flashed back to a moment at Big Stuf when I was sitting in the audience
next to one of adult leaders Ms. Leslie. I was probably no more than 20 years
old at the time. But, I remember sitting next to Ms. Leslie and as he began to
preach I leaned over to her and said, “I want my future husband to do that.”
Now what in the world did I mean by, “that?”
Did I want whomever I married one day to be a speaker at Big
Stuf? No, although that would be cool, but that’s not what I meant.
As I listened and watch Jared speak to the students this
desire rose up in my heart that I wanted to marry someone who was passionate, and gifted at
effectively communicating the Gospel to this generation. Jared was funny and
engaging, but honest and He preached the Truth.
Who knows what the future holds but anytime I see a picture
of Jared Herd or hear him preach I'm immediately taken back to that moment in
Panama City as I leaned over to Ms. Leslie, and pointed at Jared and said, “that’s what I want my future husband
to do.”
